Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month – May 2022

During the months of May, June and July, CentacareCQ will focus on Domestic and Family Violence Prevention to draw attention to what is sadly a widespread issue across our communities.

Family and Domestic Violence support worker Chanell De Klerk, said CentacareCQ, in collaboration with local businesses, community groups and organisation, would hold several awareness raising events throughout the Central Highlands Region.

“We are inviting the local community to join us over the next couple of months to help share awareness of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention,” she said.

“We will be kicking the campaign off with our annual Candlelight Vigil on Tuesday 3rd May at the Central Highlands Regional Council front courtyard of the Emerald office.

“The vigil, which will be held from 6pm to 7pm, is a ceremony to remember those who have lost their lives as a result of domestic and family violence.”

Chanell said other events, including the Domestic Violence Awareness March on May 31, was expected to have strong numbers in attendance this year.

“We had a smaller crowd last year due to COVID, however we’re anticipating a great turn out for the March this year from local businesses groups, schools and the wider community,” she said.

“We will also be hosting several other events throughout June and July to keep the momentum going including community football games, a park run, pop up stalls throughout the Central Highlands Region and a presentation at the Fairbairn Dam.

“Domestic and family violence affects people of all ages, race, gender and culture. This year we want to extend our campaign for more than just the month of May to continue to educate and support those who are affected by it.”

CentacareCQ provides supports and services to adults, children and young people who are experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, domestic and family violence in Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Blackwater, Emerald and Longreach.
